The workplace has become a more welcoming and rewarding place for women over the past several decades, but there is still work to be done in diversity, equity and inclusion. International Women’s Day, on March 8th, plays an important role in raising awareness and reminding us of the need to remain focused on diversity and inclusion issues.

To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, we spoke to some of our own talented colleagues to find out what makes them tick. In this article, we chatted with Delia Harabula, Sustainability Advocacy Lead for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

1. Can you tell us a little about your role and the things you like most about it?

Well, it’s probably worth starting by explaining that my responsibilities involve leading sustainability advocacy work in Amcor Flexibles across the EMEA region. Typically, my role involves engaging with policymakers and making them aware of Amcor’s impressive sustainability commitments, our breakthroughs in innovation, and our R&D investments. This helps ensure that all our efforts are supported by a constructive regulatory framework.

On a personal level, I’ve always been passionate about protecting the natural environment, so it’s incredibly exciting to be championing sustainability day in, day out. I would also describe myself as a people person, so it’s a bonus that most of my day is spent engaging with others.

2. Could you tell us a little about your career journey so far?

After graduating with my Masters in EU law in Belgium, I started learning the ropes of public affairs, applying what I had studied at university in the early days of my career in Brussels, consulting on public affairs and sustainability. I then went on to work within the European beverage carton industry, before finally joining Amcor. I feel lucky that I’m able to combine my legal background with my passion for sustainability.

3. How would your colleagues describe you in three words?

You’ll really need to ask them - but I’d like to think my name conjures up thoughts of someone who is competent, pleasant, and funny.

4. What does International Women’s Day (and #InspireInclusion) mean to you?

To me, it means celebrating all women in the world, no matter how different our backgrounds, our values, and our lifestyles. It’s also a great opportunity to take time to appreciate the incredible successes achieved in terms of women’s rights, while acknowledging there is still much work to be done.

Finally, it’s a good opportunity to look at the women who inspire you on a personal level. For me, at Amcor, that would be my colleague Lucie Charbonnel, also from the Sustainability team. Outside of Amcor, it’s my Mum.

5. Finish this sentence, when you are not at home, we’re likely to find you…

…on a ski slope, or a sandy beach, or in a café – planning on conquering the world with my girlfriends. If you see me on one of my favourite black runs on the Alps, beware, as I’m a relentless learner who is still conquering her fears, bit by bit, with each fall on the slopes!
