ASSET ™ lifecycle indicators explained

The ASSET ™ report shares a set of six balanced environmental impact indicators. By comparing a baseline packaging solution with an alternative, decision-makers can see the impact of this proposed change across 6 key areas:

Non-renewable primary energy demand

The non-renewable primary energy demand for both fossil and nuclear energy sources.

Measurement: MJ

Carbon footprint fossil

Measurement of the greenhouse gas emissions with a climate change impact

Measurement: kg CO2 fossil

Carbon footprint biogenic

Net greenhouse gas removals/emissions that are part of the biological carbon cycle e.g. have no long-term climate change impact

Measurement: kg CO2 biogenic

Water consumption

Total consumption of water, resulting in a decrease of the amount of readily available freshwater in a watershed.

Measurement: kg water

Summer smog potential

Ozone creation potential at ground level (summer smog) through photochemical transformation of ozone precursors like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

Measurement: kg VOC

ReCiPe 1.07

Single-score environmental indicator aggregating different areas of environmental concern: ozone depletion, eco-toxicity, human toxicity, radioactivity, POCP, particulate formation, climate change, acidification, eutrophication, resource depletion.
