The coffee packaging process can be complex and time-consuming. Amcor’s innovative degassing technology, Vento™, gives our coffee customers greater flexibility and enables them to preserve the aroma of freshly roasted coffee without extra machinery or additional processes.

Vento™, Amcor’s innovative degassing system, has been a game changer for our customers by allowing them to transform the way their coffee is packed.
It is the only coffee packaging system delivered to roasters with the degassing system already applied. By integrating the venting system into the high-barrier laminate, the pack is ready to run on filling machines immediately after the coffee is roasted with no need for additional equipment or process steps.
Overcoming coffee packaging challenges
Before Vento™, packaging coffee beans to maintain optimal freshness required effort and a major investment from coffee producers. The old solution for degassing freshly roasted coffee was to apply hard valves that allowed CO2 to escape the pack, which added parts, machinery, complexity and ultimately costs to the coffee packing process.

Vento™ offers a new, simplified packaging process. It is a degassing system that arrives already integrated directly into the packaging material. It is the reliable, efficient and flexible solution for coffee producers – no additional equipment necessary.
This is essential at a time when consumers increasingly demand “specialty coffee” [1] – coffee that prioritizes quality and focuses on standards and excellence from start (coffee farmer) to finish (consumer). Specialty coffee is celebrated for its unique flavor, specific origin and quality – and the right packaging is essential to meet these requirements. It’s an opportunity too big to ignore, as the specialty coffee market is expected to hit $83.5 billion by 2025 [2].

Amcor Case Study: Cafés Folliet premiumized its coffee offering with Vento™**

French coffee roaster Cafés Folliet, a market leading family-run coffee brand in France with a 138-year history, introduced Vento™’s pioneering technology to the ground coffee it supplies to hotels in December 2017.
The ground filter coffee that Cafés Folliet supplies to hotels for their breakfast market was previously packaged in plain packaging without a valve. However, as consumers’ expectations for the quality of coffee began to increase, there was a growing need for the hotels to provide fresher, higher quality coffee – and that meant applying a valve to the pack.
Without any investment in new applicator equipment, valves or additional suppliers, Cafés Folliet switched to Vento™ and was able to offer clients higher quality, fresher coffee with a better aroma.
Some of the other benefits Vento™ customers have seen include reduced downtime and less production waste. Roasters running three shifts on one machine could save on average 280 hours of downtime and up to 10% cost savings annually thanks to increased production efficiency, depending on machine model and the type of hard valve being replaced.

More sustainable coffee packaging
In 2017, Vento™ won a Gold DuPont Packaging Innovation award for Technological Advancement & Responsible Packaging. This was thanks to its ability to maintain barrier integrity and product freshness, weigh less, and reduce carbon footprint compared to coffee packaging with hard valves.
It is up to 87% lighter than hard valves and allows energy savings by eliminating the need to power an applicator machine. This results in up to an 8% reduction in overall carbon footprint for a 250g pack.
Standing out from the crowd with better brand differentiation
Vento™ offers coffee brands a variety of design possibilities and improved shelf appeal by allowing brands to place the vent on the back side of the pack. It can be integrated on any of Amcor’s typical standard laminates for soft coffee packaging and adapted to customers’ specifications.

Amcor Case Study: Vento™ gave Liepaja a distinct edge and enhanced its brand**

Liepaja Coffee Factory, a leading producer of instant and ground coffee in the Baltic region, chose Vento™ to debut their new Konigstern premium ground coffee.
Vento™ was crucial in offering Liepaja brand differentiation and the ability to emphasize that its freshly roasted coffee rivalled their competitors. It was also an element in Liepaja’s new brand design. The coffee roaster gained greater shelf appeal with placement of the vent on the back side of the pack, enhancing the pack’s overall visual appeal.
