Discover how the new multi-layer film technology is delivering solutions for the evolving needs of medical device packaging.

With mandatory compliance of the new Medical Device Regulation (MDR) coming into full effect in May 2020, medical device manufacturers (MDMs) must simultaneously achieve higher levels of packaging performance as well as reduce total costs through process efficiencies and quality improvements.
When developing new medical device innovations, packaging is often a secondary consideration, however the right packaging can be critical to a fast and successful product launch. Working with experienced medical packaging professionals, MDMs can focus on product efficacy knowing that the packaging solution will be tailored to enhance the usability of their device at the point of care.
Working closely with medical device manufacturers is fundamental at Amcor. We are committed to understanding the challenge each device poses to the packaging system, and we consider the journey the product must take from the device manufacturer to its point of use.
Thinner film plus better transit resistance
Our recent investment in new Advanced Cast Extrusion Technology and wide-web slitting technology means Amcor can provide higher performance films that enable cost savings for our customers.
The new DS-X multi-layer film configuration produces film as thin as 50 microns, using highly sensitive monitoring systems that allow us to individually track the thickness of each layer across the full web width.
The DS-X is a 3-way split nylon film which creates improved transit resistance when compared with other films. This improved resistance enables our customers to meet ever-increasing regulatory demands and ultimately the expectations of healthcare providers.

New DS-X multi-layer films are tailored for individual customer needs
Reasons to consider switching to the new DS-X film could include cost, sustainability and performance. The thinner films maintain transit resistance while reducing material used, which positively impacts supply chain costs and processing time, and reduces material cost.
DS X film is available in a variety of gauges so MDMs can choose the gauge that best matches their specific packaging risks. Higher performance films increase confidence in maintaining sterility which is critical with regulatory authorities.
Working in collaboration with our customers, we can supply the optimal packing solution. Whether for improving transit resistance or enabling cost savings through reduced thickness of the film, customers can work with our experts to develop the best packaging solution for their needs.
Commitment to a full-service, bespoke approach means Amcor offers packaging solutions, combined with decades of tried-and-tested experience and sector knowledge to support our customers in implementation.
