PulPac CEO Linus Larsson Green
Amcor recently announced a $3 million investment in pioneering Swedish fiber-based packaging company PulPac, supporting a cross-industry alliance aimed at driving the global deployment of PulPac technology.
The low-cost and high-performance fiber-based packaging solution is produced using raw materials readily found globally and manufactured using an innovative process that requires significantly less resources, reducing CO2 emissions by 80% compared to existing processes. Frank Lehmann, Vice President Corporate Venturing and Open Innovation at Amcor, sat down with PulPac CEO Linus Larsson Green to discuss company goals, industry partnership and higher purposes.
Frank Lehmann (FL): To start us off, what makes PulPac an important partner in the journey towards delivering more innovative sustainable solutions?
Linus Larsson Green (LLG): PulPac is a sustainable packaging technology company, and we’re working to establish circular dry-molded fiber as the next global standard for more responsible packaging. Most dry-molded fiber applications are fully recyclable as paper, one of the most recycled materials in the world. It will also degrade if it ends up in the wrong place, such as landfill or in the ocean.
FL: Could you share a bit about PulPac and the journey you’re on?
LLG: We are building critical partnerships throughout the value chain and sharing our technology, know-how and intellectual property with packaging converters globally. By 2025, we aim to have replaced 1 million tons of plastic.
FL: Exciting stuff! So, with the funding and the cross-industry alliance now in place, what are you most looking forward to being able to achieve?
LLG: With the investment, PulPac is empowered by strategic partners and capital, supporting the transition to dry-molded fiber across the value chain and contributing to its development and rollout. Working together with the world-leading partners in the alliance builds trust in the industry and will allow us to accelerate the scaling of our technology.
FL: How important is it to know that your work is contributing to find solutions that make the environment better off?
LLG: It’s fundamental and very present in our daily work. Knowing that we can bring about change for a better, greener planet boosts the amazing drive we have in the organization. It’s important to me and to the whole PulPac team, and with our technology we have a fantastic opportunity to enable that.
FL: What are your long-term ambitions for the future of the business?
LLG: Our long-term goal is to establish dry-molded fiber as a new global standard for sustainable packaging, by working together with the industry and transforming it from within. Collaborative action is key to make change happen, and I believe that insight is growing stronger and stronger in the packaging industry. Sharing is built into our technology licensing model; it supports collaboration and presents an opportunity for anyone who wants to join us in our mission to promote circular fiber solutions.
FL: Fiber solutions and new innovations are an important part of circularity and sustainability in the industry. From your perspective, how can a circular economy be achieved?
LLG: There is no ‘one solution fits all.’ We need a complete toolbox where innovation and technology like ours is one piece of the puzzle. We need a global consensus on what circularity truly means, and a collaborative approach within the industry, underlined by a sense of urgency. The time to act is now.
FL: Any final thoughts?
LLG: We are excited to partner with and have Amcor on our owner team. We very much look forward to accelerating our efforts together and bringing our innovative packaging to the market.
