How do you envision the global Government Affairs function navigating the sustainability agenda amidst a flood of new regulations and legislation?

We envision the global Government Affairs function as a bridge between Amcor and lawmakers around the world, where Amcor - working in partnership with our existing alliances, such as the Business Coalition, the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, Consumer Goods Forum, and the like - can help to educate lawmakers in order to drive informed and sensible regulation in our industry. While the regulatory landscape can be complex and challenging, it also offers opportunities to drive sustainability forward toward a truly circular economy.

What do you see as the key elements in "closing the loop," beyond NGO partnerships, to tackle government and public affairs?

Closing the loop requires a comprehensive approach that includes engaging with government bodies and the public. It's about creating policies that nurture sustainable practices, enhancing public knowledge and understanding of recycling processes, expanding recycling infrastructure, and advocating for legislative change that encourages circular economy principles.

In our quest to close the loop and include stakeholders in this transition, we're looking for meaningful engagement and opportunities to participate in active, two-way dialogue throughout the year. Notably, Amcor colleagues have been engaging in the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution sessions, which are multi-stakeholder forums focused on developing an international, legally binding treaty to end plastic pollution.

How does this integrate with the partnerships Amcor has with academic institutions and industry associations?

Our partnerships with academic institutions and industry associations are critical for staying at the forefront of legal and regulatory developments. These collaborations allow us to tap into cutting-edge research and share and enhance our advocacy and educational efforts. No single entity can tackle sustainability alone. Its complexity necessitates the involvement of a diverse array of stakeholders, including corporations like Amcor, governmental bodies, NGOs, consumers, and even individual activists. The collective efforts of those stakeholders can create a powerful force for driving sustainable change.

In a world where the regulatory and legislative environment is perfectly set up to support sustainable business practices, what role would packaging companies like Amcor play?

The ideal regulatory and legislative environment would support sustainable business practices and allow packaging companies like Amcor to continue to play a pivotal role in driving toward a circular economy.

Amcor is more than just a packaging company. We are pioneers, innovators, educators, and advocates, and hope to use our influence and expertise to drive the transition toward a more sustainable future.
