What is an engagement ambassador and why did you apply for this role?
We’ve got about 30 engagement ambassadors at Amcor now. Really, the role is all about working for the benefit of our colleagues at every level of the business. We’re leaders and influencers who are fully committed to our company’s values. Together, we aim to build an environment of trust by listening to people and communicating with them in an transparent, supportive way.
My inspiration in this role comes from my firm belief that without people, there’s no business. I always take the view that I’m not working for 400 employees – I’m working for 400 families. That means every conversation and project is deeply personal. And everybody in our team makes an important contribution to our shared success as a company.
How exactly have you helped improve engagement at Amcor’s sites?
Overall, I think our servant leadership approach makes a big positive impact. This involves asking people what they need in order to solve problems and keep improving. It’s a methodology that uses everyone’s strengths and fosters trustful connections across our team.
Dialogue is also a central element of my work in this role. We have monthly town hall events to check where we stand and focus on the road ahead. There’s also a rewards and recognition program that celebrates excellent work in every area of our team. With regular coaching activities, we explain the importance of every decision and help guide the way to forward progress. Effective communication with customers is another key part of our approach.
Does Amcor measure the impact of these activities?
Of course! At the company level, Amcor conducts the OurVoice@Amcor
global feedback survey every year to make sure we’re meeting the needs of our workforce. Within my team, we also track progress toward several master plans that we’ve developed – covering safety, leadership, training, quality… and lots more topics too. We reward strong contributions in a huge variety of ways. Some employees earn certificates, others might win cinema tickets or coupons for tasty food.
We also run an exercise to discover each employee’s superpower. As a group, we discuss our strengths and share ideas for how we can support each other to become even better. This open-dialogue approach fits perfectly with our coaching activities and trainings sessions that always feature follow-up tasks targeting measurable improvements. Sometimes, we invite customers to participate in these sessions to help boost the sense of ownership among our team.
What hopes and expectations do you have for promoting engagement at Amcor in the future?
Right now, I do feel like our company is in a strong position with an engaged global team. Looking ahead, I’d love to see Amcor further evolve as an outstanding place to work – with internal surveys and external evaluations confirming our global status as a leading employer. That requires me and my colleagues to keep earning trust every day by being honest, open and accountable. It also requires everybody in our company to embrace a mindset that is more “we” instead of “me”.
Every day is a step on that journey. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the decisions we make and consider the unique personal qualities of each individual we work alongside. That’s the crucial factor for me because I’m passionate about people. Without them, there’s no Amcor. So it’s up to everybody in our global team to listen to each other, learn together and lead our company toward a trust-based and successful future.
