The packaging value chain faces many challenges, particularly in its downstream activities. Waste management infrastructure and systems that collect, sort and recycle packaging after use have not kept pace with upstream advancements in packaging design and the demand for recycled materials. To address these challenges, Amcor actively collaborates with organizations working to establish effective and scalable recycling systems, expand infrastructure to handle less commonly recycled packaging formats and create markets for recycled materials.
One such partner is Delterra, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming waste management systems in developing countries. Delterra has recently made significant progress in Bali’s Badung Regency, where it has empowered more than 3,400 residents and businesses to adopt effective waste-sorting practices, demonstrating the tangible impact of collaborative efforts on waste management.
“Delterra’s work in Bali demonstrates how strategic partnerships can support the development of downstream solutions for recyclable and organic waste,” said Larissa Sakamoto, Amcor’s corporate senior sustainability director responsible for strategic partnerships for circularity. “We look forward to the further positive impact we can achieve together with Delterra’s other strategic global partners Mars, Procter & Gamble, and Dow on solutions to help build a circular economy for plastic.”
Amcor, alongside Delterra and its other strategic partners, has committed to advancing upstream and downstream solutions for a circular plastics economy in the Global South. Collectively, the partners have pledged $8 million over five years to drive these initiatives.
“Our proven behavior change approach is playing a key role in improving Bali's waste management systems by teaching citizens how to separate their waste, thereby maximizing the amount of material put back into productive use through recycling and composting,” Shannon Bouton, Delterra president and CEO added. “Through consistent education and community engagement, we are witnessing firsthand how simple actions help improve waste management systems and prevent waste from polluting our environment.”
As a strategic partner of Delterra, Amcor, alongside three additional partners, has committed to advancing upstream and downstream solutions for a circular plastics economy in the Global South. Collectively, the partners have pledged $8 million over five years to drive these initiatives. Amcor continues to prioritize innovating for more sustainable packaging solutions and invests in partnerships and programs aimed at strengthening global waste management infrastructure and recycling systems, while fostering greater consumer participation.
