National Water Giving Project launched by Amcor

May 29, 2008
This exciting project will see water collected from the roof at Amcor’s manufacturing sites being made available for use in the local community to address local needs.
This project is based on actively engaging the community and Amcor employees around water conservation. Employees at Amcor sites are responsible for developing a partnership with local community organisations and agreeing how the collected water will be effectively used in the local area. Amcor is taking the message home to employees by coordinating employee discount offers for BlueScope Water tanks and encouraging the installation of three star efficiency shower heads.
The 5,730 square metres of catchment roof space at the Moorabbin manufacturing sites has the potential to collect four million litres of water each year.
Twenty one BlueScope Water tanks with a capacity of 272,000 litres have been installed at two Moorabbin sites. Water collected will support the City of Kingston’s Tree Management Plan, which needs over four million litres of water to establish and maintain the 3,000 new trees planted annually.
The water giving project was officially launched today by Amcor Managing Director and CEO,Ken MacKenzie and the community partner in Moorabbin, City of Kingston, represented by Mayor Bill Nixon OAM.
Cr Nixon said he was extremely pleased to see industry working with the community on sustaining such a vital resource as water. “This water giving project will help the City of Kingston Council better manage demands on the distribution of their available water and raise awareness of the critical issue of water conservation. To our knowledge, this project is the first of its kind in Australia and we are proud and delighted to be the first Council to participate.”
Ken MacKenzie recognised the positive impact the water giving project will have on the community: “This is a very practical and effective way in which Amcor can work in collaboration with the local communities in which we operate. Water that is given to local organisations will assist with projects that ultimately benefit the wider community.”
Col Weatherstone, President Emerging Business at BlueScope Steel said of the initiative: “BlueScope Water is proud to be associated with Amcor’s Community Engagement Program and we look forward to continuing to support our business partner and their employees with their water saving initiatives.”
An employee representative at Moorabbin, Sharon Power, summarised the effect of the project on staff. “Its fantastic that we are collecting rainwater on site for use in the community, especially as many of us live in the area and can see and enjoy the benefits to our parks and gardens.”
Amcor aims to be a leader in supporting environmental and social initiatives. Amcor’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives in Australia are delivered through the teamcor™ Community Engagement Program.
