Amcor launches CoolTouch™, a lightweight decorative aluminium solution, at the IAA 2015 Car exhibit in Frankfurt, Germany

Interior automotive luxury takes shape in a lightweight aluminium solution. Amcor, a global leader in packaging, will have their latest aluminium technology on display at the IAA Car show in Frankfurt, Germany (September 17 - 27).

September 22, 2015

CoolTouch™ is a 0.2mm thin sheet of 3D formable aluminium that is applied to injection moulded plastic for decorative applications, such as car, airplane and boat interiors, as well as home appliances, personal electronics and furniture. CoolTouch™ will make its automotive debut on the interior of the 2016 KIA-HYUNDAI Optima, on display at the show.

The Optima’s interior gear panel cover with CoolTouch™ is supplied to KIA-HYUNDAI by part manufacturer, Keumgang (KGC). KGC was first attracted to Amcor’s CoolTouch™ because it offered the premium look and feel of metal, light weight and outstanding formability. “We are always looking for new materials and technologies to meet our customer’s needs,” said Jungjun Lee, Vice-President for KGC. “After investigating Amcor’s CoolTouch™ technology, we decided to present it to KIA-HYUNDAI. It has an aesthetic appeal that offers car buyers premium finishes. And it is lighter than similar solutions, contributing to better fuel economy.”

CoolTouch™ is part of Amcor’s portfolio of technical films and foils used across a wide range of demanding applications. “We developed CoolTouch™ by applying our advanced aluminium processing and lacquers know-how to achieve unique performance in formability, adhesion to plastic substrates and surface finishes.” said Marco Hilty, VP Marketing and R&D for Amcor Flexibles Europe and Americas. This thin Alu sheet is then pre-formed and bonded to plastic via injection moulding to create the finished part. “CoolTouch offers more precise formability than standard thicker aluminium solutions of 0.6 – 0.8mm. Even though it is four times thinner, it still has the feel and thermal properties of premium metal. For example, being cool to the touch when you start your car in the morning,” said Mr. Hilty.

Jungjun Lee said, “KGC are very pleased to work with Amcor to bring this new technology to KIA-HYUNDAI’s car interiors. Together, we are already investigating future applications of CoolTouch.” Amcor’s CoolTouch™ lightweight formable aluminium on the KIA Optima 2016 gear panel cover
