In the 14th episode of the Big Ideas podcast, Amcor's David Clark talks with Stephen Harrod, author of "The Future of Ecommerce Packaging to 2022" report and consultant with packaging testing and market research company, Smithers Pira.

David and Stephen explore ecommerce and the circular economy, and how packaging is vital to preventing product damage in the supply chain. One takeaway is that product damage is the least sustainable option. Put another way, if you minimize packaging to save resources but that results in damage to the product, you've lost resources.
The majority of product damage happens in the 'last mile’; that's not surprising given there are 20 or more touch points in an ecommerce supply chain compared with a half-dozen in bricks-and-mortar retail.
Discussion also covers sustainable packaging in the context of ecommerce, with Harrod suggesting the packaging industry should aim to design packaging that lives only as long as the product. He describes packaging as being "a service" to the product: "...we don't need packaging to last hundreds of years; just as long as the product requires it."
