Consumers are increasingly aware of the impact their purchase decisions can have on the environment and as much as possible, they want their favorite products to come in packaging that can be re-used or recycled. Research conducted by Accenture about consumer's shopping habits in 2021 shows that 60% of consumers are buying more sustainable or ethical products, despite feeling stress about health and the economy, with most saying that they will continue to do so. (Accenture 2021)
How do brands meet these demands in packaging, and maintain high standards in terms of safety, product protection and visual appearance?
Unilever has long been at the forefront of sustainable innovation in the FMCG industry. The company has comitted to halving its use of virgin plastic by 2025, including an absolute reduction of 100,000 tonnes, and accelerating its use of recycled plastic. Unilever has also commited to ensuring 100% of its plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
A safe and more sustainable solution for Unilever's dishwasher tabs
Amcor worked with Unilever to develop new recyclable* and ecommerce ready pouches for Unilever’s dishwasher tablets – the Sun All-in-1 brand in Belgium, Finland, Netherlands and Portugal, and the Svelto brand in Italy. Then, with the ecommerce journey in mind, the new pouch’s specially engineered structure was put through Amcor’s Ecommerce Laboratory, against the ISTA 6A standards, a certified test developed by ISTA and Amazon to simulate the ecommerce supply chain. Thanks to the rigorous ISTA testing, we can assure the products will arrive at their destinations in optimal condition.
The new, robust PE pouch can be used for a wide range of home and personal care products. With more consumers relying on ecommerce to purchase their household items, and brands' ambitious sustainability goals, we expect to see an increasing demand for packaging solutions such as these.
