One of our most recent innovations is the first fresh milk bottle made with 20% transparent post-consumer recycled (PCR) polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin, which recently launched in Argentina. The custom-designed 1 liter container supports the positioning of Mastellone’s La Serenísima Original milk brand as a natural product while also providing optimum shelf life and increased sustainability benefits.

In consultation with the brand we identified that the packaging would need to deliver on changing trends in the market and address growing desire from consumers for more sustainable packaging. Our new product delivers on these requirements. It provides an entirely new format offering for fresh milk, while benefiting from the durability, freshness, performance, and sustainability benefits of PET.

This collaboration builds on our existing partnership with Mastellone Hnos. SA, a leading Argentine dairy maker. In October 2019, Amcor Rigid Packaging’s LATAM team worked with the brand to launch a shelf-stable, ultra-high temperature (UHT) white milk in aseptic, white-coloured PET bottles.

Critically for Amcor, this new product innovation with 20% PCR PET offered us an opportunity to deliver on part of our landmark 2025 pledge – to develop all of our packaging to be recyclable or reusable by 2025, to increase our use of PCR and to collaborate to increase recycling rates worldwide.

Delivering on our pledge provides multiple benefits, it helps create demand for recycled plastic – which encourages the collection of post-consumer plastic waste and it reduces the carbon footprint of our products, meaning we can win for the planet too.

Last year we used more than 83,000 tonnes of PCR, and, with innovations such as these we’re looking to build on our progress as we seek to have at least 10% PCR use across our packaging portfolio by 2025.
