Today’s consumers are more eco-conscious than ever, and the packaging industry is rising to the challenge! In a collaboration that pushes the boundaries of more sustainable design, we have developed with Mespack, a recycle-ready, 2-liter stand-up pouch tailored for home care essentials like liquid soaps, cleaners, and laundry detergent.

2L spouted pouch

By combining Mespack’s packaging machinery expertise with Amcor’s materials innovation, this collaboration tackles the technical challenges of scaling up more sustainable packaging solutions for larger formats.

Following a successful set of trials, the new sturdy and drop-resistant 2-Liter stand-up pouch is now available for the Home Care market.

Breaking new ground in stand-up pouches for larger volumes

Until now, recycle-ready pouch formats have been limited to sizes between 1 and 1.5 liters, with larger capacities posing significant challenges in terms of durability, seal integrity, and drop resistance.
The new 2-Liter pouch was engineered to address these concerns, aiming to maintain high standards for leak prevention and robustness essential for home care applications.

This next generation 2-Liter pouch was made possible through extensive R&D efforts and advanced machinery, specifically Mespack’s H570 machine. Using a newly developed metal alloy and precise temperature control, the H570 filling machine ensures the exact temperature required for sealing recyclable materials, which is crucial for larger format pouches. The H570 also produces leak-proof packaging in several ways, including precise adjustments to ensure perfect seals across all jaws and spout preheating technology which ensures the quality and integrity of the spout seal.

The new 2-Liter pouches are made using Amcor’s AmPrima® recycle-ready solutions – providing a more sustainable packaging option that offers quality, durability, performance and speed on brands’ filling machines. AmPrima also meets the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requirements for design for recycling, and can optionally include post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.

Pouches for big formats for household products

A step towards refills and lower plastic usage

Refill pouches are a perfect fit for home care products. Flexible spouted pouches use less plastic than traditional home care packaging. In fact, pouches can deliver a reduction of up to 90% in packaging weight compared to HDPE bottles, with up to 80% lower carbon footprint*.

They also enable consumers to refill the bottles they already have over and over again, resulting in a lower packaging carbon footprint. Refill pouches can also appeal to cost-conscious consumers looking to offset inflation. Indeed, 23% of European shoppers are actively seeking retailers that offer refilling services.

The new 2-Liter stand-up pouch for the Home Care market will be available to customers from November 2024. You can read more about this solution here: https://insights.amcor.com/2litres_pouches

*Based on a cradle-to-grave comparison of standard HDPE rigid bottles with pump vs. AmPrima® mono-PE pouch with assumption of 100% incineration of the baseline pack and 100% mechanical recycling of new pack. Carbon footprint reduction is calculated using Amcor’s ASSET lifecycle assessment model, which is certified by Carbon Trust.
